Should beginners offer free work to gain digital marketing experience?

When you're just starting out in digital marketing, it can be hard to get clients without any experience to show. Would you be willing to work for free just to build your portfolio, or would you rather find other ways to gain experience? I'm curious how other beginners approach this without undervaluing their work.

I don't think working for free should be the first option. Isn't that what a portfolio is for, to show potential clients what you're capable of doing? You can create sample projects to demonstrate your skills without having to work for someone without getting paid. I understand that beginners need experience, but your time and effort still have value, even if you're just starting out.

I'd be careful about offering free work because some clients might get used to receiving your services without paying for them. If you want to gain experience, look for small projects with reasonable rates instead. You don't have to charge a lot when you're just starting out, but getting paid, even a little, helps you learn how to handle real clients while understanding the value of your work.

If a client is asking you to do a full project, they should be willing to pay for it, even if you offer a lower rate since you're still starting out. That's what a portfolio is for, right? They can look at your previous work and decide whether your services are worth paying for. I'm okay with doing something for free if it's just a small favor that won't take much time or effort, but an entire project? Come on, your skills and time still have value, even as a beginner.

Exactly! I feel like beginners need to learn how to set boundaries early on, especially when dealing with clients. If you keep saying yes to everything just to gain experience, some people might take advantage of that. It's good to be open to opportunities, but you also have to know when something is no longer worth your time and effort.
