What's your secret to getting people to actually open emails instead of sending them to trash?

Honestly, write the subject line like a casual text from a friend instead of a formal headline. Lowercase, short, and to the point. Also, don't waste the preview text with "View in browser" that space is prime real estate to spark curiosity before they hit delete.

Subject lines get them to open this email, but delivering actual value is what gets them to open the next one. If every email is just a pitch, people stop opening real quick, no matter how clever the subject line is. Keep it short and make it feel like a 1:1 message.

Keep the subject line under 4 words and make it sound like an internal email. "quick question" or "thoughts on this?" will almost always get opened over "Check out our July updates!"

The subject should be short, around 5–7 words, and should also follow the C&C rule, concise and coherent, that is enough to spark curiosity without sounding clickbait. I'd also personalize it with the recipient's name whenever possible so it feels less like a mass email.

I agree with this. Short and concise is always better. The more fluff and the longer the email, the less likely it will be read throughout and less likely for any clickthroughs.
