fresh to the industry. Is it better to be a generalist or pick a single niche starting out?

Brand new to the community and trying not to get overwhelmed by how much there is to learn. Part of me wants to master Facebook ads first, but another part thinks I should learn basic web design and SEO too. For those who have been doing this a while, which path worked better for you when you were starting out?

I think being a generalist is good at the beginning because it provides a birds-eye view of the industry. However, there comes a time when it becomes apparent that the best way to move forward is to carve out a niche and become an expert in a particular area. The reverse is also true; being knowledgeable about everything is great, but it is hard to be exponentially better than everyone else at something when you have only learned the basics of everything.

Starting with one skill can make things feel less overwhelming. Once you get comfortable with it, you can slowly learn the other areas and see how they all connect.

It also helps to look at what you actually need to use right now. You can learn the basics of a few areas as you go, then spend more time on the skills that come up most in the kind of work you want to do.

Having a broad skill set can definitely open more opportunities, but I think specializing gives you something more valuable over time. Once you find an area you enjoy and are good at, going deeper can help you stand out from people who only know a little about everything.
