fresh to the industry. Is it better to be a generalist or pick a single niche starting out?

Brand new to the community and trying not to get overwhelmed by how much there is to learn. Part of me wants to master Facebook ads first, but another part thinks I should learn basic web design and SEO too. For those who have been doing this a while, which path worked better for you when you were starting out?

I think being a generalist is good at the beginning because it provides a birds-eye view of the industry. However, there comes a time when it becomes apparent that the best way to move forward is to carve out a niche and become an expert in a particular area. The reverse is also true; being knowledgeable about everything is great, but it is hard to be exponentially better than everyone else at something when you have only learned the basics of everything.
