Are transaction fees cutting into your profits too much?

I usually build the blended processing fee into pricing and treat it like fulfillment rather than surprise buyers with a card surcharge. For low-margin orders, a minimum order value or a small ACH or bank-transfer discount is often less irritating than adding a fee at checkout.

Building the fee into pricing is usually cleaner. I'd calculate the true blended rate across card types, refunds, chargebacks, and fixed per-transaction fees, then check contribution margin by order size. If small orders are the problem, a minimum basket or product bundles can improve the economics without presenting the change as a payment penalty. ACH discounts make sense only when the extra checkout friction still preserves conversion.

Treat payment fees as part of the full cost of each order, not as a surprise expense at the end of the month. Start by calculating the blended rate across cards, wallets, refunds, and chargebacks. Low-margin products may need a small price adjustment, while higher order values can often absorb the fee. A minimum order or bundled offer can also improve the margin without adding a visible surcharge. If a surcharge is used, show it early and explain it clearly so customers are not surprised at checkout.
