Is SEO actually worth learning for a brand new site?

Everywhere I read, people say giant websites dominate every single keyword now. Is it still realistic for a beginner to rank on page one of Google, or should I just focus on social traffic instead?

You shouldn't ignore Google even if you are a beginner. Submit your site to Google search console. Make sure you have a search.xml and just keep working on focusing on specific keywords and eventually you will find yourself at the top of searches.
