What should an abandoned-cart email say before offering a discount?

Does your first abandoned-cart email include a discount, or do you begin with a reminder and an offer to help? For anyone who has tested both, what happened to completed orders and profit after discounts? I’d also like to hear whether addressing delivery costs, returns, or product questions made a difference. How do you decide when an incentive is worth offering?

Normally, I wouldn't offer a discount right away. The customer may just have forgotten or have been distracted which is why they abandoned their cart. Offer to help or ask if there's anything you can do to help them complete their purchase. Offer discounts if there was no response or if the cart remains abandoned after a number of days.

I think it’s better to remind them what they left in their cart first and maybe mention the product’s value or benefits. Then, if they’re still hesitant, offer a small discount as a little extra push to complete the purchase.

Before offering a discount, I would say address any concerns the customer might have and remind them what is in the cart. I believe it is important to encourage the customer to complete the purchase rather than just reducing the price right away. Some people simply forgot about the item, while others were just browsing and got distracted.

A simple follow-up message can go a long way when it feels helpful rather than pushy. It also gives the business a chance to understand what might be stopping customers from checking out.

Yeah, not everyone who abandons their cart is waiting for a discount. Sometimes they just get distracted or run into an issue at checkout. I’d rather check in first and save the discount for later instead of giving one away when it might not even be needed.
